Jal Mandir Pawapuri
Overview
Jal Mandir (Water Temple) is a world-famous temple situated in Pawapuri, Nalanda. Built entirely of pristine white marble, the temple stands in the center of a massive square lake filled with red lotuses. Devotees cross a 600-foot stone bridge to reach the temple. It houses the ancient footprints (charan paduka) of Lord Mahavira on the exact spot where his body was cremated.
History & Origins
Constructed by King Nandivardhan, the elder brother of Lord Mahavira, to mark the site of cremation. According to legend, the lake was formed when millions of devotees took a pinch of soil from the cremation site, creating a massive crater.
