Kesaria Stupa
Overview
Kesaria Stupa is an ancient Buddhist monument situated in the East Champaran district of Bihar. Standing at a height of 104 feet, it is considered the largest Buddhist stupa in the world. Excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in 1998, the stupa has a unique polygonal brick structure with multiple terraces containing niches that house statues of the Buddha.
History & Origins
Dating back to the Mauryan and Gupta periods, the stupa was visited by Gautama Buddha on his last journey. Emperor Ashoka built a pillar here to mark the spot. The present brick stupa was constructed during the Pala dynasty.
Spiritual Significance
Marks the sacred spot where Buddha gave his alms bowl to the people of Vaishali before his death, telling them to return home.
