Mundeshwari Temple
Overview
Mundeshwari Devi Temple is located on the Mundeshwari Hill in the Kaimur district of Bihar. Built entirely of stone in an octagonal plan, it is recognized by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as the oldest functional temple in India, with continuous worship since 108 CE. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Shakti (Mundeshwari Devi). It features rare stone carvings and ancient Sanskrit inscriptions.
History & Origins
Dating back to the Kushan period, the temple was built in the early 2nd century CE and represents a landmark in early temple architecture (Nagara style predecessor).
Spiritual Significance
Revered for its ancient, unbroken worship. The principal deity is a four-faced Shiva Lingam (Chaturmukhi Shiva).
