Built in 1786 by Captain John Garstin of the British East India Company, the Golghar is Patna's most famous colonial-era monument. Standing near the Gandhi Maidan, this massive beehive-shaped granary was constructed to store grains following the devastating Bengal Famine of 1770.
1. Beehive Design
Golghar is designed as a pillarless dome structure, standing 29 meters high with walls that are 3.6 meters thick at the base. Two spiral staircases wrap around the exterior, allowing workers to carry sacks of grain to the top opening and descend.
2. Acoustic Echo
The dome has unique acoustic properties, producing a loud echo of any sound made inside. From the top summit, visitors can enjoy a beautiful view of the Ganges River and Patna skyline.
3. Travel Guide
Golghar is open daily. A beautiful light-and-sound show is organized in the evenings, depicting the history of Patna. We cover ticket details and visiting hours.
