Valmiki National Park, Tiger Reserve, and Wildlife Sanctuary lies in the West Champaran district of Bihar, nestled in the scenic Himalayan Terai foothills along the Gandak River. Spread over 800 sq km of sal forests and bamboo groves, it is rich in biodiversity, housing Bengal tigers, leopards, Indian bisons (gaurs), and over 250 species of birds.
1. The Wildlife Experience
The reserve offers daily open-jeep safaris through the sal forests. Key highlights include:
- Tiger Spotting: Tracking the majestic Bengal tiger along designated forest trails.
- Canopy Walk: A suspended wooden walkway high above the forest floor, offering scenic views.
- Bird Watching: Spotting rare species like the golden-backed woodpecker and emerald dove.
2. Riverside Adventure
The Gandak River flowing along the reserve offers a perfect setting for water sports. Visitors can enjoy light white water rafting (Grade I and II rapids) and stay at beautiful eco-cabins overlooking the river. Bonfires and tribal dance performances are organized in the evenings.
3. Practical Booking Guide
All safaris and eco-tents must be booked online in advance via the official portal (vtr.bihar.gov.in). The park remains strictly closed during the monsoon months (June to September). Carry valid ID proof for checkpost verifications.
