Sonepur Cattle Fair Grounds
Overview
Sonepur Fair is held on the confluence of the Ganges and Gandak rivers in Sonepur. It is the largest animal trade fair in Asia, lasting for 15 to 30 days. Historically, traders from across Central Asia came to buy elephants, Arabian horses, and cattle. Today, it is a grand cultural festival showcasing local handicrafts, amusement rides, folk theater, and traditional foods.
History & Origins
Dating back to ancient times, Emperor Chandragupta Maurya used to buy elephants and horses from this fair across the Gandak River for his army.
